Family Room Update: Painting the fireplace wall with lime paint

Bloggers Challenge, home sweet home, project diy

If you’ve been around the blog, my IG page or been over to our house lately, you know I lean toward a very neutral (with lots of white) palette. Today is no different in the sense that I am still sticking to neutrals, but really stepping out of my comfort zone painting a wall a color outside of white. Still neutral but surprisingly, I actually felt like I could have gone darker. Yes I’m serious.. I’m shocked too. If my sister is reading this, she’s probably rolling her eyes and thinking “don’t do it, you’ll just paint it back to white.” Maybe, but I won’t know til I actually try. And so for now, we won’t go darker and see how we feel in a few weeks.

Have you guys every tried lime paint? Well my friend Natalie over at Deeply Distressed introduced me to a paint company called Pure & Original and I was immediately drawn to their packaging. Yes you guys, I am that person! I really appreciate nice packaging! But also drawn to the texture their paint gives. It’s just intrigued me so I had to try it out.

I used their lime paint called Fresco and I love the finish it gives. It was so easy to paint on and I really just had fun with it and didn’t try to paint perfectly. Here’s what their website says about this paint:

Lime paint, a type of paint that has existed for thousands of years, is being made again in a traditional way by Pure & Original. Fresco lime paint is a 100% mineral paint, composed of quick lime and natural pigments. The final finish is very authentic, matte and shows different shades and strokes. Available in more than 100 colors. Mold and bacteria resistant.

I wanted to play it safe so I mixed 1 part wet sand to 1.5 parts silk white. And I just eyeballed it so wasn’t precise at all with that and it was totally fine. I used the silk white to lighten it a bit. In hindsight I think I would have just did 1 to 1 because I totally could handle the wall being a little darker. But before I commit to a darker wall, I think I will see how I feel for a month.

It goes on darker and dries to a lighter shade.

I still have to go in and clean up the edges because I was in a bit of a rush and wasn’t too clean when placing my painters tape so now I have more work to do. I always say I won’t rush next time so I don’t give myself extra work but here I go again. Oh well!

So for this next week, I’m hoping to work on our coffee station. Because we homeschool and Jason is busy with work, we really can’t do projects during the week but with celebrating our oldest son turning 14 this weekend, I’m hoping I can make the time to do it and finish it all by next week, We kind of threw this station together because this was right before I was about to go into labor and the last thing I wanted to do at that time was take my time on DIY projects. Again, in hindsight I wish I would have just taken my time so I didn’t have to go back now to work more on it. And again, oh well..

We just heard news that the rug we chose from RugsUSA won’t be able to make it here on time but I am so excited to put that in here to make this room a little more cozy for these upcoming winter months. You can find the rug we chose here.

Until then, we will enjoy our floor bare a little longer.

That’s it for today. Hope you enjoyed this post! Check back next week for an update of the room. Find more projects happening during the One Room Challenge right now here.

Btw, did you notice we got our other armchair cover from Bemz in?! So so excited about these covers. I love the statement these chair covers make in this space. I’m so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone! Anyway we are so close to having this room finished!!
