One Room Challenge: BREAKFAST NOOK (week one)

Bloggers Challenge, home sweet home, project diy

Hey guys, I cannot tell you how excited I am to be joining the One Room Challenge this time around as a guest participant! I have loved this challenge and enjoyed checking out my friends beautiful projects but have always been a little nervous to participate. Just the thought of “what if my design ideas don’t come to life as they do in my head?” and “what if I don’t finish the project on time?” Well this time, I’m not letting those silly ideas get in the way! I mean hello.. this is what I do.. just presenting it to you guys before I start is all. No big deal. HA. But seriously, this is going to be so much fun!

We have been slowly renovating this fixer upper ranch since we bought it about 11 months ago now, and  the room I decided to work on for this challenge is our breakfast nook. It’s such a simple and small space, but, it gets a lot of use (specifically a lot of breakfasts and homeschooling) and unfortunately has been neglected as far as design. I mean a fan right above where you eat?! Is this a thing? Well it came with the house and it freaks me out and I’m just ready to get this ball rolling!

Here’s some before pics I took in the fall:

When I moved into this house, I tried forcing the farmhouse style that was in our last house, but I think every house has its own personality and as a creative, we also grow and change, right?! Now don’t get me wrong, I love the modern farmhouse style along with so many styles out there, but I am loving embracing my personal spin on the styles I love and what this ranch style house seems to also embrace: a mix of modern, eclectic, bohemian, chic with a touch of modern farmhouse all held together with a relaxed, airy and fresh feel (my forever go to’s). My favorite thing about design is the ability to express yourself creatively and just being yourself in the process!

Our breakfast nook is right off the kitchen. We are almost done with our kitchen. You can see what we’ve done so far here. It’s amazing the changes that’s already happened in here. One thing we haven’t shared on the blog, though, is this DIY built-in bench which is an awesome Ikea hack. Let me know if you want more details, and I can definitely share those in a post for you guys.

After I was done putting together this design, I was really trying to figure out what was a photo I’ve came across that was an inspiration. And though to be honest, my design was based partly on what I could afford (which is painting the table and chairs I already have and working with the built in bench we already put in this past summer). But then an image came to me. Something I have swooned over many times over (designed by Amie Corley Interiors):

That’s major inspiration if I ever seen one! Now, trust me guys, I wish I could put these style of chairs on my design board. And to be honest, it was on my original design. Yes, I have looked high and low for some that were in my budget, I mean I only need 2-3 for my nook, but they were either sold out or out of my budget. I am still eyeing a pair, so if one design change happens, I’m hoping it’s swapping out the chairs in my design for these bad boys! But anyway, overall, I love this breakfast nook and I think it has many of the design elements I am planning for in my design!

With that said, let’s move on to the (affordable) design plan:

  •  add a bench cushion for the ultimate cozy nook and pulls to the bench cabinets!
  • throw some fun pillows in the mix that’ll fit through the summer time with a mix of pink femininity, grounded with a little indigo.
  • add a rug below for extra warmth and layer it with a print that would be more forgiving for those occasional spills
  • replace that fan with a more relaxed and a little boho look I am loving right now
  • step it up a notch with extra lighting that has the perfect mix of modern and chic to it
  • add a natural earthy element with the roman shades
  • a simple and fun gallery wall on the adjacent wall
  • DIY painted breakfast table and metal chairs to brighten the space
  • simple decor

A very big thank you to my sponsors who provided some beautiful items for this project: the shade storenuloommaren devine art and jolie marche

I am so excited to be sharing more of the process with you guys. Be sure to tune in every week, for the next 6 weeks, where I’ll go into more details, sources, set backs (if any) and more as we move forward with the design! Love the bright, white design! I also love that you have decided to put your own spin on the modern country design, that is the best part about home decor. Making it uniquely you.
