Our imperfect repurposed side board Ikea hack

Hey there, hope you had a wonderful weekend. If you’re from California, how bout that beautiful weather, huh?! I’ve been living here my whole life, and I can never get over how beautiful it is here! And even now, as I write, it’s another beautiful and HOT day today! My son is actually outside right now digging, trying to help dad (while he’s at work) with preparing to lay down some cement so he can have a place to play basketball outside. Of course he gets extra allowance for doing this, so it’s a win win for him.

If you saw my IG post this morning, you saw the Ikea table that I decided to finally take apart after about a year from the first time I asked my husband if I could do this. Talk about lagging, right?! That’s me! Well, in all honesty, I totally forgot I had even thought to do this. I guess the main reason I didn’t jump the gun til now is cause I tried looking up ikea hacks on this table but didn’t see anyone do what I wanted to do to it, so I assumed it was cause it wouldn’t work and maybe was a bad idea altogether. And the only reason I came to doing this today, was because I was actually removing all the items off of the table, to go and move this piece outside and start afresh. I was thinking last night as I went to bed, that maybe it was time to go head and build a new side board based off of one of Ana White’s plans. Something I have also been considering for a while.

Well, on it’s way out, I remembered that original idea of just taking it apart to remove the pieces that make it 4 openings per row to just making it 2 openings per shelf, if that makes sense. That way, there would be more room to put larger items on the shelves. I’m so glad I did, because now isn’t really a good time for me to be building something like a side board from scratch with my husband working lots of overtime. It’s a busy time in our life right now for all that, so this will do. And I have to say, I love it. The only other change I think I will be adding to this table at some point is I’d love for the table top to have wood planks on it to make it look a little more personalized and have more durability for this space. Maybe even paint the base..? Who knows.

This piece is called the Ikea Hemnes Sofa table meant to sit in back of your couch. Although, I really do love a table behind a couch, we moved this table to be used as a side board after purchasing a sectional that worked best against the wall. And, this is really helpful to hold things that had no permanent home prior to here. This “ikea hack” was so simple and took me about 30 minutes to take apart, remove those dividers and put back together. The one thing my husband wants to do when he gets home today is to add some type of reinforcements to better support the table, since I removed those pieces. I don’t think it’s necessary, but I would imagine if you kept moving the table, it may eventually be in need of that extra support.

What do you guys think of the changes? I know it isn’t a big change, visually. But I am so happy that I can make better use of this with the changes that were made. Isn’t it more practical as a side board now and for its use here? I think so! I’m very pleased with the outcome. Like I’ve said many times, think twice before throwing something out!
