Fall 2020 tablescape + how to use every day items and summer pieces on your fall table

blog hop, room tour, Styling, tablescape

Happy September friends!

It’s usually still pretty warm this time of year in California, but that’s definitely not going to stop us from preparing a fall tablescape! A big thanks to my friend Bre over at Rooms For Rent blog for putting together this fall soiree blog hop! So excited to join these ladies to share our fall tables today:

It brings me much joy to create, and adding a warm tablescape today did just that! These are weird times with all that’s going on in the world, but it’s comforting to me to still be able to do things like set a table and make it pretty, having some sense of normalcy in our home.

For our Fall table, I used a mix of every day items and summer pieces, mixed in with a few new fall pieces to create this warm and kid friendly tablescape! Because let’s be real, this table was set for mom, dad, and 4 kids that get kinda messy!

How to dress your fall table using everyday items + summer pieces

  • my favorite way to make a table feel more festive and dressed up is with this simple touch: cloth napkins and napkin rings! I found these napkins at Homegoods (found similar ones on clearance here) and I love that they are this deep charcoal grey color which is perfect for every day use because this color will totally hold up to those spaghetti sauce, cheesy macaroni and ube ice cream lips being wiped. I love these new napkin rings I just found here, but if you don’t have napkin rings on hand, no problem! Just use twine or jute string instead!
  • another easy tip using every day things, is adding fruit that’s in season or what you have on hand that goes with your table situation. My dad has been giving us asian pears from his yard and I thought it was perfect for adding to this table.

  • as far as summer pieces, you know those outdoor dishes we usually use for the patio, well I purposely got dishes that I can use all year long. I mixed our everyday dinner plates with these dinner bowls which have been our favorite summer bowls, made of melamine and bamboo. And I guarantee you, these will be used all year round!
  • another summer item that’s perfect for incorporating into your fall tablescape is rattan, seagrass, or natural woven pieces. I think these bring a natural element as well as a layer of texture to your table. I have these seagrass pitcher and glasses that were styled and used for the summer, but I think they transition beautifully into fall! Instead of a regular dish, I used these handwoven Portuguese baskets made of palm leaves to hold our bread.

  • Here’s my absolute go to tip that helps me enjoy what I do have through out the year, and still gives our table a festive feel: choose pieces for your home that transitions into each season well. For me, sticking with neutrals as a base, and limiting the pieces that can only be used for a specific season to a minimum.

On my fall table today, the only 2 items that I couldn’t see myself using all year round is the table runner and dried floral in the vase. But even those items, I can see myself using in more than 1 season. Other than that, because everything else is pretty neutral, I can use them all year round! To me, that’s practical living!

Hope you enjoyed today’s tour of our fall tablescape and found some ideas on how to create a pretty table with what you already have around your home as well as extending the use of those summer items!
