Our corner breakfast nook full reveal!

project diy, room tour

A lot has happened around the world the last few (more than a few) months that’s caused a major pause here on the blog (and many parts of life, really). But with businesses able (somewhat) to safely open back up, we were able to get the last few pieces we needed to finish up our breakfast nook!

This post does contain affiliate links at no cost to you. As always, all thoughts are my own!

Before I go on, I wanted to thank a few sponsors who provided some items for us to finish off this space!

  • Tonic Living who provided all our throw pillows! We have worked with this amazing company and absolutely love all our pillows from their beautiful shop! They have some great pieces so be sure to check them out!
  • Patio Lane provided our beautiful custom fit built in bench cushions. We worked with them before in our last kitchen and loved the quality so much that we worked with them again! We totally recommend for your custom cushion needs!
  • Willow Bloom Home provided us with our woven wood shades that really compliments our casual neutral home! Such a great company to work with and very helpful in the order process!

It took a lot longer than I had planned on sharing, but no complaints here, we are finally ready to share the whole reveal today of our breakfast nook corner that was once a corner of our living room space. Here’s what it looked like before we moved in:

Then here’s how it looked before we started on kitchen demo:

We really enjoyed having this space as our family room. It was nice and cozy but we had to rework this area because we needed a little more room with our kitchen remodel, which meant this space had to undergo some changes. Here’s what the space looked like in the inbetween phase:

We even tried the space as our dining room. I loved it, but Jason didn’t like the idea of having no family room in the back of the house so it didn’t last very long.

But then again, it did last long enough for us to add a chandelier in here. Haha!

Let’s get to it, shall we!?!

Lots of fun changes, but in the end, we went with this breakfast nook addition and the whole family has been really enjoying this space! You can find our oval dining table, wishbone chairs and chair cushions here.

Built-in bench and custom seat cushions

Let’s break it down starting with our built in bench and custom cushions from Patio Lane!

We debated on doing an Ikea hack again like in our last kitchen, but to make it even more budget friendly, we created our own built in bench just using 2x4s for the framing, mdf boards for the walls and a higher quality plywood for the seat. We saved a few hundred doing it this way and so far so good! We put hinges on the bench seat so we can store seasonal items inside. I would show you today but it totally needs one more coat of paint and I am the master of procrastination when it comes to finishing those unseen areas! I created a visual guide for the bench dimensions to make it easier when it came to building it. This measurement was for the seat so I made sure there was enough room for the baseboards.

We added these pretty custom cushions from Patio Lane and went with this classic stripe. I originally was leaning on grey striped cushions but we wanted to try something different since we had grey in our last house. The cool thing is these seat cushion covers can be unzipped and we can always order a different fabric when we feel like switching it up. We have yet to wash the cushion covers (which is a shock with 4 kids and using it for 3 months straight) but I love that we are able to when the time comes!

Below is the sample and name of the fabric we went with. You can find the fabric here and for a limited time you can get up to 10 free samples from the standard Sunbrella collection here.

I’ve had multiple people tell me they were intimidated about ordering custom bench cushions, and honestly the first time around, I was too! But it was so easy to input your measurements and if you’re still unsure, you can talk to a rep who will assist you in the process. I totally recommend Patio Lane for your custom cushion needs! It also made it a lot easier when we went to order our seat cushions because I was able to use my visual guide with the dimensions since the measurement was for the seat.

Accent throw pillows for style and comfort

Let’s talk about our new pretty throw pillows from Tonic Living! I love this combination so much! When I was wanting to do a 1 stop shop for all my pillows, Tonic Living was the first shop that popped in my head. They have a lot of pretty patterns and designs to choose from so I knew I couldn’t go wrong with them. Before I ordered, I made myself a little pillow mood board. I love doing this to see how the pillows look grouped together. I totally recommend doing this if you’re looking to buy a collection of pillows for your space. Or if you want to mix some with your current pillow collection.

I was drawn to 2 looks: an earthy organic feel and a more coastal casual look. Here’s what it looks like styled both ways:

This mix gives an earthy and organic feel. A mix of black, beige, saddle and tan color give that vibe perfectly.

The nook feels more coastal casual with just swapping out 2 black pillows for these blue pillows along with adding some tropical clippings from the yard.

Adding a striped blanket throw is another way to give a space instant coastal vibes.

Adding texture and privacy with window treatment

On to our new loved custom woven wood shades from Willow Bloom Home. I am so impressed with the quality of the shade material and the overall design. It’s sturdy and very well made.

We went with the Lea Desert woven blind which is each unique and constructed from all natural materials such as bamboo, wood, reeds and grasses. It gives an organic feel and adds the perfect amount of texture.

You can choose from 3 systems: cordless, continuous loop, or cord lock. We went with cordless for the larger windows and continuous loop for the 2 narrow windows between the fireplace. Cordless was my first choice, but with the window so narrow, this was recommended. I also chose an inside mount, with a privacy lining but you can choose what fits your needs. Check them out here for your custom shades and drapery needs!

Modifying our inset shelves to work with our nook

The only thing different we did with this inset wall before the built in bench was add shelves. But when we planned to add the bench, we knew we had to close the bottom portion. In the end it all worked out and it looks like it was always meant to be this way.

Light fixture and furniture pieces

We had some difficulty finding the right table for this corner. We actually first tried this table:

A look around the breakfast nook

I hope you enjoyed the full reveal of our breakfast nook we designed in here. It took some time to get to where it is today and that’s okay because home really does take time!

Stay tuned for our next full reveal coming soon of our newly renovated family room. This space has also gone through a few major changes to get to where it is and I can’t wait to share the whole space. Here’s a peak of the space:

Love this transformation. It feel so luxurious and welcoming. I have a question though. Did you guys add a door on the wall opposite the new kitchen nook? I’m thinking there was a solid wall there before. Either way, it looks so beautiful and airy. So impressed!

Hi Alma! New follower here 😀
Wanted to ask you if by any chance do you remember how high do you built the bench? And your cushion is 2 or 3” high?
Planning on doing something similar but I’m lost . Appreciate your feedback
