Our new living room tour + stairs remodel before and after

home sweet home, project diy, room tour

We recently have been multitasking, working on multiple projects all at the same time the past few months. It was a true case of when you give a mouse a cookie. Today I wanted to share the changes we made in making our once combination living room/dining room into a dedicated living room and the project that started the whole idea: the stair remodel. And if you’re wondering what happened to the dining room, I already shared a little bit of it on IG, but will be sharing more on that here soon.

New layout

Here is the space when we moved in vs. what the living room looks like today:

Today

The most obvious changes are the wall paint, new flooring, curtains and light fixture update. And if you didn’t already notice, we (Jason) decided if we were going to make it a dedicated living room, we needed to have a larger tv. That meant moving the tv from under the stairs to the larger wall because the stair wall was too small for anything larger. It was a compromise, and it’s taking some time, but I’m getting used to it. I think..

And below, the biggest change is the stair remodel. We kept the original railing and switched out all the balusters.

Today with the upstairs loft closed up and stair remodel

You can see here how the room looked like right before we turned the space from a living/dining room combo to a devoted living room space:

Stair rail/ entryway remodel

Most recently you can see here, we removed the bottom of the stairs to remove that curve that was there because of the old coat closet, and made it a straight shot:

The stair rail is now a straight shot on the bottom portion with a door we added to our mudroom.

I found this pretty console table on Amazon of all places, and it’s definitely my most favorite Amazon find to date!

Gallery Wall

There’s something about a gallery wall that makes a space feel more cozy and welcoming. I just gathered random frames and art I had in various sizes to make it feel more collected instead of uniform. I highly suggest mapping it out before adding any holes to your wall.

New Chaise Sectional

When we decided to create a dedicated living room here, I knew I wanted to add a chaise sectional. We visited The Futon Shop, looking for something else, and stumbled on the Daisy Organic Natural Sectional which is customizable. Both Jason and I loved that it was deep and we were able to choose the firmness (we went with the medium firm ) and fabric. I knew right away I wanted to go with the linen fabric in Bone. The best part is their furniture is all eco friendly and non toxic which to me meant no need to worry about airing out the furniture or being worried about any harmful odors.

I don’t think I ever shared our new arched storage cabinet and tv cabinet which is actually a buffet table. They are both from the same collection and I think I had my eye on these guys for at least a year or 2 before pulling the trigger. I actually never saw them in person, but they definitely are better than expected.

Hope you enjoyed this tour of our new dedicated living room and a look at the stair/entryway remodel. We have plans of a few more changes and it has to do with the vaulted ceiling here. We don’t have a set date but I will definitely share more details once we are closer to making it a reality. Stay tuned!

The stair remodel is a standout feature, and the decision to move the TV to a larger wall was a smart move. The gallery wall and the chaise sectional add a touch of coziness and elegance to the room.
