Rooms We Love Home Tour: adding character to a simple family room

blog hop, home sweet home, Home Tour

The days are long but the years are short.. Isn’t that the saying? Well I don’t know how much of that is true because man, the days have been flying. Don’t you just hate when it’s the end of the day and you feel like you didn’t get as much done as you wanted? This has been the story of my life lately, whether it be the basket(s) of laundry still waiting to be folded or the closet still needing organization. I can go on, but today I thought I’d put that all aside and share something light and fun and welcome you to the Rooms We Love blogger home tour!!

Today I’ve teamed up with some amazing bloggers, hosted by my very talented friend Tammy over at Pink Peppermint Design, to share a room we each enjoy. If you just hopped on over from Nina and Cecilia where she shared a gorgeous bedroom, I’m so excited you can join me today as I share our family room and share tips to add character to a simple space.

Do you ever feel frustrated by a space? I know I do. The layout of this room sometimes annoys me because it’s a pretty narrow space, lacks natural lighting compared to other rooms and is just overall challenging to have a layout that is both practical and pretty. Though it has it’s issues, the best way to make up for a rooms downside is to compensate in other ways.

Here are some pretty simple ways I added character to our simple family room!

Add some pretty wall art!

These 2 prints on these walls are from ccandmike.com at their print shop. The birds can be found here and the desert print can be found here. I love these prints and both fit in so well in our home! Check out more on their page for a great selection of prints!

The frames are from Framebridge which is a really cool company that does custom framing with such a pretty selection of frames. The frames I went with is called Marin which is a natural wood gallery frame. It’s simple and clean just like I like my frames! I love how you could either upload a photo or mail your artwork for them to frame. The best part is they are great quality and super easy to hang!

Express yourself!

Shelves is an easy and fun way to express yourself without adding tons of holes in the wall and isn’t permanent. Which means you can change things up super easy and whenever the mood strikes! We added these floating shelves and shared about putting these up here. Everyone always ask about the brackets we used. Apparently they look similar to some high end ones that cost more than double what w paid for each bracket. You can find our affordable brackets here.

Hardware!

We recently updated our door knobs with these pretties from grandeurhardware.com  which has really given these doors some personality. We would love to someday update all our doors but for now, we are enjoying the character these knobs add to our home!

The left door is our garage door so we went with a more hefty knob called the Fifth Avenue Plate with Fifth Avenue Knob and Deadbolt Combo Pack in the color Timeless Bronze. The knob below is also Fifth Avenue Plate with Fifth Avenue Knob in Timeless Bronze. We love the feel of these knobs and know the classic style will be loved for years to come.

Lighting is another way I felt would add some life and character to this room. We added these Kai wall sconces from Mitzi above our built-ins. I love the simple feel they give and the subtle lighting they provide in the evening in here. I love Mitzi lighting and their fun and modern choices!

This sputnik light lights the room up well but also is a little funky and fun. I love the finish on it and how the lights can be adjusted, giving the shape of the light the ability to fit lots of different spaces!

Add a pop of color!

The rug is the newest addition to this room. I found this beauty here at Rugs USA in the color Rust. I love the colors found in this rug. I actually came across a very similar vintage rug online that was more than double the price of this one and half the size so I passed. I was so excited when I spotted this, and when it arrived, it didn’t disappoint! The colors are interesting. It has a nice mix of warm tones, cool tones and overall has this neutral feel to it.

Don’t forget the little details that make styling a room fun!

That’s it for today! Hope you enjoyed our family room tour and some tips I use myself when styling a space needing a little character!
