Getting a room guest ready + some simple tips to make it feel like a retreat!

home sweet home

With Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years right around the corner, it’s  the perfect time to spruce up the guest room and get it ready for guests to come and stay! Our little guest house is currently under renovation and we’re not only adding a shower to it, but also adding a kitchenette and converting the little garage into a bedroom. Totally looking forward to sharing the progress on that! So although the guest house is not quite ready, that’s not stopping me from sharing some ideas on how we get the guest room ready and even going the extra mile with Serena and Lily today to make it feel like a retreat! And currently, they have the Sleep Well Event going on which is up to 30% off all beds and beddings. No code needed.

Choose a color palette that feels relaxing

When I think of a place that feels like a retreat, I imagine a space that feels airy and light, and not at all busy, but rather relaxing. Which is why my first tip in creating a retreat for guests is choosing a color palette that really promotes rest. Wether you go with a moody and dark palette or light and airy one, keep it simple and soothing. I went with an airy palette because it’s my favorite which I think is what Serena and Lily does so well and probably why I love their shop so much!

I went with classic white linens to create a calm and welcoming space. The bedding sheet set, duvet, pillow shams are all from the Positano bedding set which I really love for it’s casual yet luxe design and feel. I’m a firm believer that quality linens really elevates a guest bedroom and Serena and Lily offers an amazing bedding selection! You really can’t go wrong with their bedding!

Add some interest. We want a soothing space, not a boring one!

Add a little accent to the bed that keeps with a relaxing theme but also adds a little style and flare. If you are going to go all white with the bedding like I did, I think it’s especially important to add some accents. I added the Topanga linen pillow cover in Ivory. It has more of a chambray natural finish and the gorgeous tassels give that added detail I wanted to keep the bed interesting and elevated. I actually have the Topanga throw on the way but it didn’t make it on time. Instead I used a wool throw from Serena and Lily that’s unfortunately sold out now.

I also added that cute medallion throw pillow that has a hmong fabric feel to it and adds a little pattern.

Another way I added interest was with this cute mirror. I love the bamboo detail. I think it gives the room a fun detail but also has purpose. Perfect for doing a quick teeth check or for reapplying lipstick!

Make a clear and designated area for them to place their belongings

I love having wall hooks available for easy hanging and also a cabinet to store clothing. It would be great to let them know when they first come which drawers and spaces are available for them to use. That way they know right away where they can put their things.

Just got this beautiful artwork in from Deb Presutto Fine Art and I am loving the calm vibes it adds in here. Her work is beautiful; I love every piece in her shop!

Display a basket of fresh bottled water and maybe even some snacks for them

Having these available for them is just a nice convenience to have and definitely allows your guests to stay and relax a while longer!

Neatly folded bath linens readily available that are just as amazing as the bedding!

Who doesn’t appreciate soft luxurious towels?! It’s not a retreat without towels that feel luxurious and soft. I ordered a few towels to add to our guest bathroom but like the throw blanket, it didn’t make it on time for this post but I still wanted to share the ones I ordered. I chose a mix of the Healdsburg collection along with the Napa collection. I’m a sucker for the gorgeous tassel fringe and the Healdsburg towels are a turkish towel, super soft and so stylish!

Like with the bedding, I mixed in the Napa towels to mix in some ivory. These turkish spa towels are super soft and absorbent but not bulky at all. They definitely will make the guests feel pampered! And come on, who doesn’t want that?

Provide some entertainment to help them relax

Some people need music for relaxing or a show to help them unwind before they go to bed. I love this Google Hub because this little thing can do a lot! You can ask what the weather is, listen to music on it and even watch some videos that you can easily cast from your smart phone!

Greenery or a floral arrangement always makes a space feel more welcoming and warm.

There’s just something so inviting about foliage and flowers. The life it adds to a space is just comforting and I think it’s also thoughtful and shows care!

So here’s just a few tips on how I like to get the guest room ready for guests and feeling like a retreat. Do you have a tip you’d like to share? Please do in the comment box below!
