The budget friendly modern California boho bathroom reno

home sweet home, project diy

Hope you had a very happy new year! I got sick just a few days into the new year so it was not quite how I envisioned to start off the new year. Instead of going through each room and clearing out anything we no longer needed and organizing, I’ve been in bed and on the couch just resting. But I was able to plan out the kids bathroom renovation, and Jason just got started on demo a couple days ago, so even still, things are moving.

For this bathroom we are on a small budget for a complete 75 sq. ft. bathroom renovation. There was no way of saving the shower tub or vanity and we recently purchased the toilet so pretty much everything had to go. Our target is to stay under $3500 for everything including a new tub, toilet and vanity with tub/shower trim and sink faucet. From paint, tiles, and grout, to all the finishing touches like light fixtures, cabinet pulls and decor. So far we are thinking it will be around $3200 but giving outselves a little wiggle room because something always comes up!

Before

Here’s what were working with. It’s a pretty humble space but I have seen 3 kids brushing their teeth at the same time in here so I think that’s a good sign that it’s more than enough.

The bathroom is roughly about 75 square feet for reference.

Demo time!

And here we are today after Jason and one of the boys ripping everything out.

The design plan

I created a little design board for the plans I have for this space. I may make a few changes but I’m liking the overall mood here. We are keeping the same layout and giving it a fresh new look. All 4 kids share this bathroom so we want to go with a neutral look with a modern coastal feel with the bright whites and brass, a little rustic with the vanity and some boho touches that will tie in really nicely with the rest of the house. I’m calling this project the modern California boho bathroom reno.

We really are doing our best, trying to keep this renovation on a low budget. Finding nice quality pieces at low prices takes a little extra work which worked out for me being sick on the couch, I had a little more time than usual 😉

Great vanity find!

I was so happy to find some great pieces for this design. It takes a little more work when you’re on the hunt for a combination of quality, look and budget friendly, but you know I am always happy to share those finds with you guys!

I found this amazing vanity at Costco of all places, and you guys, I looked high and low for a vanity that was the right size, with a pretty wood finish, and with a nice and clean design. This vanity did that and more and is currently $150 off. It also comes with this beatiful quartz top and 2 options of knob and faucet finishes. I decided to go with a brass finish so I won’t be using these, but what a great price for all that it comes with.

You can see here the vanity has rustic qualities that will help warm up and add depth to the mainly white bathroom. You can in the pic the very light veining on the quartz which is exactly what I was hoping for!

Light, cabinet knobs, shower, and sink fixtures.

Finding affordable lighting these days is a lot easier and I found these fun wall sconces for under $100 for 2 and they come in some other fun color options.

You can see in the photos I snapped of the vanity that I tried a brass knob that I took from our kitchen. I loved the look but those are a bit of a splurge, so instead I found a very similar affordable knob option that I will be using instead.

For the shower and sink fixtures, we considered not going with brass because it’s hard finding an affordable option with good quality. But after thinking through it and searching, I decided to stick with brass and spend a little more to get the look.

It’s in the details

Behind the vanity and toilet we will be adding shiplap. I keep going back and forth between vertical or horizontal planks, but this renovation is already going so we will all know soon enough! Jason did remind me how much easier it is to go vertical with easy and quick cuts, so we know which way he’s leaning 😉

For tile, we will be using an elongated hexagon tile in white for the shower walls and make it more fun with a darker grout. For the flooring we are going with a classic hexagon tile in gray and would like to have the grout be the same color for a more clean look.

Can’t wait to share more. I’ll be sharing more behind the scenes over on Instagram stories so be sure to check there for updates.

Also, while doing home renovation, I personally love to emphasize and focus on the bathrooms. Clean and organized bathrooms are so important. Also, just for help, if anyone wants custom shower doors, I have heard of https://www.goframeless.com/. They are dealing in Shower Doors since 15 years.

They’ve renovated their kids’ bathroom with a modern California boho style, all while sticking to a budget of under $3500. They found a great vanity at Costco with a quartz top and brass finish, along with affordable lighting and other fixtures that fit the modern coastal and boho theme. The neutral colors create a soothing and versatile space that’s perfect for their four kids. Overall, it’s a practical and stylish approach that has transformed their shared bathroom into a favorite spot in the house.
